The choice to root the core of the film's narrative in the Strode women and their fractured family dynamic makes for some incredibly compelling storytelling. It also just so happens to sport the film's three strongest performances.

We'll go more in-depth on Jamie Lee Curtis in just a few entries, but Judy Greer Andi Matichak as Karen and Allyson, respectively, are incredible. Greer doesn't get a whole lot of screen-time but she makes what she does get count.

Little moments such as her explaining her childhood to Allyson or even her more vehement exchanges with Laurie give Greer the chance to really flex her acting chops and it works excellently. In the hands of a lesser actor, the role of Karen could have easily felt underplayed. But Greer's performance earns Karen every bit of credibility and makes her active role in the third act feel earned.

Meanwhile, Matichak winds up nearly stealing the film out from under everyone else. Allyson is stealthily kind of the actual primary protagonist of this film in a lot of ways and the role asks a lot of Matichak. Yet on every occasion, she rises to meet the challenge and surpasses it. Especially in the third act, Matichak showcases a versatility and range that is wholly unexpected.

Between these great performances and an ending that knows exactly how to utilize each of them, Halloween 2018 creates a Strode family dynamic that will remain iconic for decades to come.
