10 Things You Need To Know About James Cameron's Spider-Man

10. It Would've Been Sort Of Low-Budget

Marvel was not having the best time in the late eighties and early nineties. Even before the speculation boom and sudden collapse of the industry at large, they were already floundering somewhat; their financial struggles got so dire a few years later, that they actually filed for bankruptcy. One of the ways they attempted to stave off total ruin was in licensing their characters to anybody who asked. Hence all the Marvel Vs Capcom video games, the animated series of varying quality and selling of all the movie rights. It's why Fox still own X-Men and Fantastic Four, and Sony still control Spider-Man. Before the major studios got them, though, the rights were with somewhat less reputable production companies. Fantastic Four got a ludicrously low budget adaptation that was mercifully never released, and James Cameron's treatment for a Spider-Man movie was to be made by Carolco Pictures, who went bankrupt some years later.
