Not everyone is lined up to join the fray however and the question remains over which of Hunt's many old IMF allies and colleagues are waiting to be accepted for this mission - or how many have chosen to pass on this latest adventure. Rhames' return was only confirmed by McQuarrie on Light the Fuse this week, indicating that the full ensemble may not be locked and loaded in its entirety just yet.

The only other key recurring characters across the series that therefore remain up in the air in regards to the future are Michelle Monaghan's Julia Meade, Jeremy Renner's William Brandt and Sean Harris' Solomon Lane. The former made her first major appearance since M:I-III in Fallout, where she and her former husband Ethan achieved a sense of closure, meaning that her arc is likely to be done and dusted, while the latter looks to be out for good after serving as the big bad of both Rogue Nation and Fallout, though his ultimate survival means he could theoretically return.

But Renner's status remains more curious. There are conflicting reports on the Hawkeye star - second-billed in Ghost Protocol and follow-up Rogue Nation - was AWOL from Fallout, namely that the creative team assumed he was busy shooting Avengers: Infinity War and then subsequently intending to shoehorn a hasty demise into the first ten minutes. Either way, he didn't show - and for now, appears to be also sitting out the next chapter too. (McQuarrie further revealed on Light the Fuse that a key part of the character's Ghost Protocol arc ended up with Pegg's Benji instead.)
