10 Things You Need To Know About Tim Burton's Batman Forever

3. Kids Would've Hated It Still

Speaking of definitely not fun for the whole family, apparently the final nail in the coffin for Tim Burton's Batman was how doggedly persistent and stubborn he was about not making superhero films that was okay for kids to watch. Despite the obvious huge merchandising pushes with Batman and Batman Returns, neither film's really suitable for children, in terms of content, themes or plot. Which meant they were missing out on a huge potential audience.

Eventually it was their insistence that Burton tone down the darkness, stop sympathising with the freakish villains and pointing out how similar they were to the hero, and genuinely making the Batman films a little more family friendly that had him leave the franchise, taking Waters and Keaton with him. If he'd been allowed to make Batman 3 the way he wanted, however... Yeah, it would've continued to be totally family un-friendly.

Between the darker spin on The Riddler, Dourif as The Scarecrow and the return of the S&M-inspired Catwoman, it might've caused as much a controversy as Batman Returns did when it somehow managed to get rated PG-13 for brooding, dark violence. Kids love that!
