10 Things You Need To Know About Top Gun: Maverick
9. It's Still Tom Cruise!
At the 2019 Comic-Con, Tom Cruise confirmed that he would be returning to the Top Gun world as heartthrob and bad boy Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. While introducing the eager crowd to the sequel trailer, Cruise explained that he wanted to make sure the 2nd film was done properly so that the fans would not be disappointed.
According to the actor, a big priority for the film was to involve the audience as much as possible. The director wants you to feel as if you are there with the pilots in the plane, experiencing the same motion sickness as Cruise apparently did when he first flew in an F-14 fighter jet. Cruise is known for doing his own stunts in movies, and when it came to filming for Top Gun, he made sure to produce footage that made viewers feel as though they are right there in the cockpit, experiencing the intense G-Force.
Cruise is actually flying the plane in most of the shots that you see of him in the cockpit. While piloting the P-51 and helicopter in the movie, Cruise was really the one in control. The only plane the Navy said he couldn't fly was the F-18 but the IMAX cameras fitted in the jets make it feel as real as possible.
