10 Things You Only Notice Rewatching Snyder's DCEU Movies
7. Superman Drowning In Skulls
This is a detail which goes across two movies, again highlighting that for all his flaws, Zack Snyder has always been good at the visuals. Neither of the scenes contain much you’ll only notice the second time around, but it’s their connection that might go unnoticed.
In Man Of Steel, one of the visions General Zod gives Superman sees the titular steel man drowning in skulls. He desperately claws his way out but only sinks deeper during the claustrophobic sequence. It highlights that Superman is not invincible, and that his biggest fear isn’t a physical weakness, but the idea that he could succumb to corruption.
Though perhaps not perfectly executed, Supes killing Zod was actually on brand with his ideals to not kill; it was supposed to be the catalyst for that morality.
In Batman v Superman, we see Superman surrounded by adoring fans at Mexico’s Day Of The Dead, wherein al the guests paint their faces with skulls.
It means Superman’s vision came true, although not quite in the tyrannical way it was predicted. It did still, however, hint at corruption, as the blind hero worship towards Superman ultimately sent him on a collision course with Batman.
