8. Sullivan’s Truck & Tractor Repair
A little bit deeper than Ace Chemicals here, as this one’s not just a background detail, but one which references a past depiction of Superman on screen. It comes in Snyder’s first DCEU film, Man Of Steel, and shows his love of all things Superman.
While Papa Kent doles out another dose of advice, there’s a clear sign in the background which reads ‘Sullivan’s Truck & Tractor Repair’. It’s a clear reference to Chloe Sullivan from Smallville, played by Allison Mack.
We could talk here about Smallville here, or how the background adds a rustic character, but it’s much more interesting to talk about Mack herself.
Like a lot of TV stars, after her biggest role in Smallville, she never broke out and her career settled down. In 2015 though, she stopped acting completely, and in 2017 it became apparent Mack was a leading recruiter for the cult Nxivm, led by self help guru Keith Raniere.
By 2018, Mack had been arrested for her part in the cult, including charges for sex trafficking and conspiracy to commit forced labour. You can bet Snyder wouldn’t be referencing her if he made the movie again today.
