Netflix and Academy Award may not be two things youd expect to hear in the same sentence. However, in 2013 they released The Square, an Egyptian-American documentary film directed by Jehane Noujaim, depicting the Egyptian Revolution of 2011. The film won universal critical acclaim and at the 86th Academy Awards it was nominated for Best Documentary Feature, making it the first ever Oscar-nominated Netflix original production. Despite missing out on the prestigious Oscar, it did win awards at both the Sundance and Toronto film festivals, as well as 3 out of the 4 Emmy Awards for which it was nominated.
