The DC Comics movie universe seemed to be off on a good start with Man of Steel, Zack Snyder's modern, contemplative take on the Superman mythos. He followed it up with the crowded and somewhat muddled Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, which met with a mixed reception.

The next DC film, Suicide Squad, was a noisy mess with some good performances but not much else. The DC movie universe was increasingly being seen as an unrelentingly dark, morose world that broad audiences were having a harder time connecting with.

Then, along came the Wonder Woman solo film. Immediately, it set itself apart from the others with its hopefulness and positivity. The film was an enormous box office and critical success, and the highly-anticipated sequel is on its way.
