10 Third Movie Sequels Better Than Anyone Expected

It was always an unconventional franchise. The original Evil Dead was a shoestring budget film made by a handful of dedicated lunatics, and it was so wild and dark that it couldn't even secure an R rating. The sequel, Evil Dead II, was likewise bizarre, a broad slapstick comedy covered in blood.

The final film in the original trilogy, Army of Darkness, was a sci-fi/action time travel period piece epic, and audiences were confused by it. The entire series was a beloved cult collection, but no one really expected to see more of them.

That changed in 2013, 21 years after the release of Army of Darkness, original director Sam Raimi announced he would be producing a new Evil Dead directed by internet phenom director Fede Alvarez.

Though it seemed at first to be a remake, the final moments of the film reveal it to be a sequel of sorts, and one that gained mainstream release and success without sacrificing the over-the-top weirdness and gore that always defined the series.
