10 Time We Absolutely Believed The Movie Hero Was A Goner

9. Cooper – Interstellar

Let's be honest - it's unknown what would happen if a person got sucked into a black hole. (Astrophysicist, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, believes it would exceed the “intermolecular forces that bind your flesh" but I've no idea what that means.)

But whatever a person’s fate would be, it’s probably not survivable. So, when the characters in Interstellar repeatedly emphasised the destructive force of this astronomic phenomenon, we knew it was best for the astronauts to stay as far away from black holes as possible.

But when NASA pilot, Cooper (Matthew McConnaughey) realise their spaceship is too heavy to escape the gravitational force of the black hole, Gargantua, he disconnects himself from the vessel. Although this successfully causes the ship to jettison to safety, Cooper's craft passes through the event horizon, meaning it's impossible for him to avoid falling into Gargantua.

As the boundless darkness of space envelopes him, the viewers are waiting in horror (and morbid curiosity) to see what fate he will suffer. Will he be ripped apart on an atomic level? Will he be crushed by the black hole's intense gravity? Or will he experience a death beyond our understanding or imagination?

Whatever happens to him, we're certain about one thing - Cooper was done for.

Except... he wasn't. Cooper manages to survive since the black hole he falls into houses a tesseract, which has taken the form of a four-dimensional bookcase... okay, it may be a cop-out but at least it was creative.
