10 Time We Absolutely Believed The Movie Hero Was A Goner

8. Neo – The Matrix

There are three big reasons why most viewers reasoned that The Matrix would conclude with Neo biting the big one. When he meets The Oracle, she warns him that his mission will end with either him or Morpheus dying. She also implies he's not the fabled One, meaning he's just as vulnerable as anyone else.

But the main reason why we thought Neo would die is.... we literally saw him die! After seemingly defeating Agent Smith, Keanu Reeves' character flees so he can jack out of The Matrix.

Just as he's about to, Smith ambushes Neo, blasting him in the chest. Not wanting to risk him getting away again, the snarling Agent empties his clip, spraying Neo's body with bullets. As we cut to Neo in the real world, we see his heart has stopped.

Since Neo had demonstrated skills on par with Agents in previous scenes, we hoped he'd prove The Oracle wrong, by showing he is humanity's saviour. But after Smith filled his chest with lead, it looked like the prophecy was a lie.

Thankfully, Trinity revives Neo with the power of love (that part is still stupid), allowing him to become The One, and destroy Smith.
