10 Times Actors And Directors Disagreed On Their Film's Story
7. Gabriel Byrne And Bryan Singer - The Usual Suspects
Although the 90s neo-noir mystery is not looked at as fondly these days due to Kevin Spacey and Bryan Singer’s (deservedly) tarnished reputations and despicable actions, The Usual Suspects is still a well-acted and solidly scripted film that just happens to feature one of the most iconic twists in the pantheon of 90s cinema.
The twist surrounding Keyser Soze’s real identity was so well-hidden that each main cast member believed that they were the criminal mastermind due to Singer’s misdirection. To add further confusion surrounding Soze's identity, multiple actors and crew members (Spacey and Byrne included) filmed different scenes as the enigmatic antagonist.
The actual truth did not sit right with Gabriel Byrne in particular, who felt deceived by Singer and this led to a half-hour argument between the two after the first cut was shown to the cast. Singer’s decision helped keep the villain’s identity a mystery may not have sat right with the film’s lead but it paid off handsomely in the end.
