Nobody had the slightest inkling how nightmarish the production of Super Mario Bros would be. The film went way over budget, the script was changed daily, and the directors were fired. The lead actors found the experience so miserable, they regularly got drunk on-set. The Not So Super Mario Bros. bombed at the box-office, was torn apart by critics, and is directly responsible for the stigma surrounding movies adapted from video games.

Even though none of the actors or crew knew what to expect going into Super Mario Bros., nobody was as unprepared as the lead star, Bob Hoskins. The Cockney actor accepted the role of Mario Mario (that name is still stupid), unaware the property was based on a video game.

Many people find this fact unbelievable, since the the Koopa-stomping plumber was the most recognised video game character at the time. But since the gaming industry primarily focused on a younger demographic during that era, it's understandable why Hoskins was unfamiliar with the Nintendo's moustachioed mascot.

Also, it was probably for the best Hoskins didn't know about the game. The movie had so little connection with the source material, it would've just confused him more.
