10 Times Adam Sandler Proved He Can Act

9. Murder Mystery

Punch Drunk Love
Netflix

First, to business: this Netflix original was viewed by 73 million households in its first four weeks of release, which is nothing short of staggering. It’s a gentle comedy, it stars A-lister Jennifer Aniston alongside Sandler, it’s a tried and tested genre spoof - that it did well is no surprise, but those numbers are wild.

Unlike some of Sandler’s other Netflix offerings, though, this one is actually worthwhile, and much of this is down to the performance of its leading man. Sandler switches on the charm here. Unlike some of his late period films he’s not sleepwalking through this, not looking forward to the next break so he can muck about with his mates. His chemistry with Aniston is warm and believable, and the film is a reminder that Sandler is bankable for a reason: he’s an immensely likeable leading man.

Numbers this gigantic mean there’ll inevitably be a Murder Mystery 2, and the jury’s out on whether that will manage to maintain the big man’s attention. For a (mostly) family friendly slice of late period Sandler, though, this one’s a winner.
