10 Times Adam Sandler Proved He Can Act

3. The Wedding Singer

Punch Drunk Love
New Line Cinema

Adam Sandler rarely plays anything but a leading man. A romantic lead, however, is a little less in his wheelhouse, or so you’d think. In The Wedding Singer, Sandler dials down the wild affectations, and dials up the sweetness, making for a winning and beloved ‘90s classic.

His role of Robbie Hart is quite an un-Sandler character. Rather than a wild dreamer with a head full of totally impossible visions, he is a man of small ambition with reasonable goals. After losing his fiance, a new romance blossoms with Julia, played by Drew Barrymore. A romcom lives and dies on the chemistry of its leads, of course, and Sander and Barrymore play remarkably well off each other. Sandler has rarely been more charming or outright likeable than he is here, still within his canon of man-children, but with substantial heart.

This period of Sandler’s resume can tend towards the sappy (Big Daddy), but he hits the sweet spot here. He was never going to be the next John Cusack or Hugh Grant, but his romcom credentials are forever cemented.
