The death of Bruce Wayne's parents is considered to be one of the most tragic events in comics. Two good people, pillars of Gotham City society, gunned down in front of their son. It was also the catalyst to send the now orphaned and very wealthy Bruce down his dark path of vengeance.

Alfred, however, who was as close to Martha and Thomas Wayne as anyone, has no problem seeing a lighter side in their deaths.

In an issue of The Batman Adventures, Alfred responds to Bruce's criticism of his sandwich-making skills with a surprisingly dark joke:

"Do you know what I did to the last person that said that to me, Sir?"

"What?"

"Hired a junkie to shoot her and her husband in an alley."

Anyone else daring to make fun of their death would no doubt end up in traction for several weeks, yet Alfred threw the line out there like he was making a knock-knock joke.

In another instance of downplaying their death, Alfred bets a 'very early in his career' Batman that he is too overconfident in himself and his abilities. With the bet laid, Alfred sets out to hire a team to closely recreate the Wayne's death. Batman comes across Alfred's setup, becomes emotionally invested, and proceeds to take a beating as a result. At that point, Alfred arrives, removes a dollar from a pouch on Bruce's utility belt, and walks away.
