10 Times Comic Book Movies Made Us Cry
8. Uncle Ben's Death - Spider-Man
It seems that the movie industry has become obsessed with Spider-Man as of late. Ever since Sam Raimi kickstarted the wall crawler's debut on the big screen back in 2002, Marvel's most popular superhero has gone through countless iterations, from Tom Holland in the MCU to five different people in Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse. On the other hand, no matter how many times you see Spidey onscreen, he isn't without his fair share of tragic moments.
Though many directors have taken on emotional scenes like the death of Gwen Stacy or the death of Prowler in Into the Spiderverse, it always comes back to the death of Uncle Ben in the original Raimi adaptation. Throughout the film, we have gotten to know Ben as Peter's moral compass, who always is looking to do right by his nephew who he views as a son.
After giving his "With great power comes great responsibility" speech, Peter yells at his uncle before gambling in a wrestling tournament. Things may have been looking up once Peter won, but when he fails to stop a thief from robbing the tournament, he finds out that the same criminal ended up killing his uncle just a few moments later.
While the performance by Tobey Maguire is already emotional as it is, there is a look of determination in his eyes, as if we are witnessing Peter Parker turn into Spider-Man within the span of a few frames.
