10 Times Directors Hated The Films They Made
7. Highlander II: The Quickening (Russell Mulcahy)
One of the rare films to receive a 0% approval rating on movie review hub Rotten Tomatoes, Highlander II: The Quickening is widely-regarded as one of the worst films ever made. While the 1986 original has gone down in history as a cult classic, the sequel went totally off the rails, taking place in multiple time periods and even throwing aliens into the mix for good measure.
Australian director Russell Mulcahy, who was also responsible for the first film, cited executive interference for the poor quality of the final cut and totally disowned the project. He even wanted to have his name removed and replaced with the infamous pseudonym Alan Smithee, but wasn't allowed to do so.
Mulcahy despised the film so much he allegedly walked out of the premiere screening after just a quarter of an hour. He later pieced together his own cut of the film, called the Renegade Version, to show off his true vision, cutting out many scenes and replacing them with several deleted ones. The whole subplot regarding the aliens was cut out of Mulcahy's version and fans tend to agree it's a better film overall.
