Stephen King might be one of the most gifted writers of all time, but he definitely doesn't seem cut out for directing. The only film he ever directed was 1986's Maximum Overdrive, which earned two Razzie nominations and was even classed as the worst ever King adaptation by the man himself.

The film, which starred Emilio Estevez and was based on a King short story called 'Trucks', quickly put the horror writer off directing for the rest of his life. King later admitted he was using cocaine heavily at the time of production and had no idea what he was doing, calling the film a "learning experience" but quickly realising he was better off behind a typewriter than a camera.

King's careless approach even led to a couple of on-set accidents, one of which saw the director of photography, Armando Nannuzzi, seriously injured. Nannuzzi lost an eye when an RC lawnmower span out of control and sued King and others for $18 million. The case was settled out of court but summed up the overall disaster that was Maximum Overdrive.
