Multiple Oscar-winner David Fincher is generally considered to be one of the best directors in Hollywood today, responsible for such fantastic films as The Social Network, Fight Club, Seven, and Gone Girl. His feature directorial debut, however, didn't go as well as he might have hoped.

Fincher, who was known as a music video director at the time, was called in to replace Vincent Ward at the head of Alien 3, the third instalment in the popular sci-fi horror franchise. Various crew members were fired and replaced over time, leading to a troubled, up-and-down production process. Fincher claimed that he tried to take control of the movie and make it as good as it could, but said that the studio executives simply didn't care.

The director got into arguments with the production company regarding budget and deadlines, and claimed that their interference and refusal to cooperate resulted in a film he wasn't proud of. In fact, Fincher has repeatedly stated that he hates Alien 3 more than anyone else and has completely disowned the project.
