10 Times Hollywood Pissed Off Fanboys (And Then Proved Them Wrong)
2. When Fox Added Quicksilver To The X-Men Universe
Marvel fandom is complicated enough without the involvement of movie studios, though the fact that the ownership of their many characters is split between numerous companies creates even more headaches. Quicksilver and his sister Scarlett Witch are the perfect example of the legal minefield that filmmakers are currently treading.
In Marvel's comics, the siblings are affiliated with both X-Men and the Avengers, being children of Magneto who eventually come to see their father's evil ways and end up being recruited by Tony Stark. As they feature heavily in both stories, both Fox (who own the rights to X-Men properties) and Disney's Marvel Studios (proud owners of the Avengers) were able to use him in their respective movie universes.
While it perfectly possible to be fans of both franchises, most Marvel fanboys prefer to align themselves with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and those fans were up in arms when they found out that X-Men was going to use Quicksilver before MCU did. The main argument was that Marvel Studios would make a much better job of adapting the character, though that turned out not to be true.
Aaron-Taylor Johnson's brief and largely forgettable stint as Quicksilver in the MCU was dwarfed by Evan Peters' portrayal of the character in the 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past and recently in X-Men: Apocalypse, in which he stole a number of scenes. In the end Fox were vindicated in their decision, not only exercising their right to use Quicksilver but doing a better job of it.
