10 Times James Bond Movie Franchise Went Too Far

2. Going To Space - Moonraker

The Spy Who Loved Me concluded with the words, "James Bond will return in For Your Eyes Only." But upon seeing the staggering success of Star Wars that same year, the studio decided to adapt the Moonraker novel, so the story could take place in space. (It's worth mentioning that, at no point in the novel, does Bond or any of the main characters leave the Earth's atmosphere.)

Obviously, this decision was a very bad idea. "Going to space" is a franchise's way of saying it has completely run out of ideas. (Look at Jason X or The Fast and the Furious 9.)

Also, this is James Bond! It's a spy saga, not Star Trek. Sure, the characters can be silly and the gadgets are a little over-the-top, but we should never see 007 donning a spacesuit and blasting gangsters in space with a ray gun. (It doesn't help that the space battles are slow and the special effects are awful.)

Moonraker made nearly ten times its budget but that doesn't change that having Bond in space may very well be the most Jump the Shark moment in the franchise.
