10 Times Marvel Sabotaged The MCU

9. The Franchise's Tonal Approach

Now, the MCU's relatively light-hearted tone is not a deal breaker when it comes to enjoying the movies, but it does come close to being so in a handful of cases. There have various scenes that were building up towards an emotional, pathos-filled climax only to be derailed by an ill-timed quip.

This is seen in films such as Thor: Ragnarok (Korg's quip after Asgard's destruction), Captain America: Civil War (the airport battle's stakes were stymied by the constant wisecracking) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (pretty much the entire film), and while the jokes do not ruin these films, their stakes and emotional weight feel less palpable when our heroes are joking in front of the threat at hand.

The MCU does not need to course-correct and adopt a grim, cruel tone in the vein of Batman V Superman but at the same time, it needs to find a more appropriate place for its humor. This way, the tonal shift will not feel as jarring as it has in some films and the quips that are appropriately timed will feel that much more earned.
