This entry may age like milk in the midday sun once Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness comes out, but Scott Derrickson's decision to leave the sequel early in its development may leave a dent or two in the film (and wider MCU)'s artistic ambitions. Furthermore, this instance is nowhere as complicated as the MCU's encounters with other directors in the past.

The director left the film in early 2020 and revealed that the reason for doing so was Marvel's reluctance to make a full-out horror film and instead make a superhero film with horror elements in it. Seeing that Derrickson is a capable horror director and delivered a solid origin story for the titular hero, a proper horror film featuring Strange and his surreal adventures would have been a treat for MCU fans.

Granted, the sequel now has an incredible replacement in famed horror director Sam Raimi, and while there is little to no doubt that the horror elements will be handled well, one cannot help but wonder what a proper horror MCU film would be like, especially under the inspired direction of Raimi.
