After the events of Civil War, T'Challa/Black Panther becomes the new king of Wakanda after his father T'Chaka's passing. From the mistakes his dad made in his own past, the new monarch is challenged by a cousin he had no clue existed - Erik Killmonger, who seeks revenge for his own father's death.

Killmonger's father N'Jobu was killed by T'Chaka when he was just a child. The Wakandan king was unaware that Erik was born, leaving him as he left for Wakanda. The young boy discovered his dad's body and soon joined the US military, with a mission to gain back control of the kingdom, its secret resource of Vibranium and take revenge on the monarchy.

T'Challa is left with his father's own mistakes and has to deal with Killmonger himself, leading to a near death experience for the king and Erik's own demise by the end of the film.

All could have been resolved, with both living in peace in Wakanda if T'Chaka had realised N'Jobu had a son and had taken him under his wing to begin with.
