10 Times Movie Sequels Abandoned Major Storylines
9. Vanessa's A Fembot – Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
In Mike Myers' classic Bond spoof, Austin Powers awakens in the '90s, only to learn that his swinging lifestyle is considered inappropriate, especially from his co-worker, Vanessa Kensington. Thankfully, the pair work out their differences and fall in love.
Because Austin Powers follows the 007 format to a T, you'd assume that Vanessa would be replaced with another love interest in the sequel. However, the promotions for Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me implied that Vanessa would return.
And she does - at least, for the first scene. Within the opening five minutes, Vanessa is exposed as one of Dr. Evil's fembots. After Dr. Evil blows her up, the character is out of the picture. Fans were upset by this reveal, since it made Vanessa's inclusion in the film completely pointless.
To add to the confusion, Basil Exposition (yes, that's his name) tells Austin that the higher-ups at British Intelligence were always aware Vanessa was a robot.
If that's the case, why did Basil have Austin team-up with a murderous android in the first place? Why didn't Dr. Evil program Vanessa to kill Austin as soon as they met? More importantly, how did Vanessa have a conversation with her mother if she's not human?
So many questions.
