10 Times Movie Sequels Abandoned Major Storylines
3. The Secret Apprentice - Spiral
Seven years after the Saw franchise was seemingly put to rest, a new instalment called Jigsaw was released. This time around, pathologist Logan Nelson and several police officers discover a slew of recently-murdered victims who fit Jigsaw's MO, despite the fact John Kramer and his disciples have been dead for years.
In the final scene, Logan reveals to his corrupt associate, Detective Halloran, that he is the new Jigsaw, and has been John Kramer's apprentice from the very beginning. After framing Halloran for the murders, Logan has him executed before the screen cuts to black.
Because Logan was a genuinely intriguing villain, fans were curious to see how his story would unfold.
But after Chris Rock had a chance encounter with Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns, he convinced him to take the Saw series in a new direction, with him playing the lead.
As a result, the following sequel, Spiral, focused on a new Jigsaw, discarding Logan Nelson's story arc entirely. Although Saw X is to be released this year, it's likely we won't be seeing Logan making an appearance then - or ever.
