10 Times Movie Sequels Screwed Over Strong Female Characters

8. Princess Fiona - Shrek 2

Rose Rise of Skywalker
Dreamworks

Princess Fiona made a home in our hearts as a belching, fighting, caring, no-nonsense tour de force in the first Shrek film.

Her character is the living proof to not judge a book by its cover as the seemingly distressed damsel proves she is anything but as she single handedly puts Robin Hood and his band of merry men in their place. All the while, Shrek and Donkey could only watch open-mouthed as they learned that the Princess was a lot more than met the eye.

The character portrayal of Fiona was wonderfully written and we eagerly anticipated how the writers would build on this character in the long awaited sequel.

Although there were glimpses of the Fiona we knew and loved from the first film, her role was reduced to nothing more than a confused monotonous character who was just a passenger in this explosive fairy tale adventure.

Most strikingly, when the potion turns Fiona back into a human, she is met by Prince Charming posing as Shrek and, instead of trying to find out what was going on and how to reverse the spell, she just goes with it and let's Charming and The Fairy Godmother boss her around.

I see my role at WhatCulture the same way my wife sees my role as a lover: I contribute in a very small way, my presence is barely noticeable and I’m not entirely sure if the laughter is at me or with me.
