10 Times Movies 'Did Right By The Fans' (And Pissed Everyone Off)

1. Tying Rey's Heritage To An Original Trilogy Mainstay - Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise Of Skywalker

Disney’s Star Wars trilogy is an example of having the best ingredients at play but being unable to bring them together due to poor planning. Despite the strong performances and top-tier production values, the films were hamstrung by a clunky overarching narrative that tried to please diehard fans, but to no avail.

This was best exemplified in the trilogy-closing The Rise of Skywalker, a film that tried to appeal to everyone regardless of their opinions of The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. This was an exercise in futility as both films received (to a degree) wildly different fan reactions and this resulted in the worst-reviewed Star Wars project since Attack of the Clones.

One of the many reviled plot beats in the beleaguered feature was Rey’s heritage. The Last Jedi revealed that the Jakku resident did not come from any special bloodline, and this worked in broadening a universe mocked for its focus on one or two families.

Unfortunately, the 2019 threequel decided to lean into this derided narrative choice and have Rey be the granddaughter of Palpatine, in a shallow attempt at both novelty and familiarity. While Rey renounces her heritage and chooses to honour the Skywalker name, depicting her as her own person would have had more weight behind it.
