Even to this day, if you were to say the name Troma Entertainment few people would know who or what you were talking about unless of course, you're a fan of schlocky independent B-movie cinema.

This makes the existence of Toxic Crusaders all the more miraculous, because not only did it come from Troma, but it was also a family-friendly spin-off from their most recognisable property, The Toxic Avenger. A movie about a mutated superhero nerd who wears a disintegrating pink tutu and wields a mop in his quest for revenge. It's not the kind of fare that screams kids cartoon, but you'll be glad they tried.

Bearing striking similarities to other environment-conscious animated shows such as Captain Planet, Toxic Crusaders followed a group of rather unconventional superheroes who fought against pollution and crimes against nature. Standing in their way, a corrupt mayor and polluting baddies from another planet.

For unfathomable reasons, the series only lasted 13 episodes, but it did result in an awesome toyline (which cartoon didn't?) and one of the best-titled episodes in a cartoon called 'Invasion of the Biddy Snatchers'. Even so, it's still astounding to think that a four movie franchise with obscene gore and no budget managed to have a colourful cartoon series based on it.
