10 Times Movies Unexpectedly Spawned An Animated Series

7. The Mask: Animated Series

The live adaptation of The Mask is a curious case study and a movie that flies in the face of 'you need to be dark and gritty' in your comic book adaptations.

The Dark Horse comic on which the film was based was dark - like, very dark. Yet, the movie adaptation was much more humorous and light-hearted (in places) as it was turned into a vehicle for Jim Carrey to expand on his ever-expressive facial contortions and buffoonery for all the kids to enjoy. Going one step further than this and doing a full 180 was the animated series that followed.

Mask: The Animated Series lasted three completely bonkers and zany seasons, one more than most cartoons adapted from a movie, running from 1995 to 1997. It even featured a mind-blowing (to kids) crossover with the Ace Ventura cartoon that was running at the same time.

Those with good hearing too may have noticed that the voice behind Stanley Ipkiss/The Mask was none other than legendary voice actor Rob Paulsen.
