In recent years, two franchises have been hamstrung by their lack of clear planning and delayed rejigging of their stories. The early DCEU and the Star Wars sequel trilogy were undeniable financial success, but aside from a handful of entries the two franchises’ films felt rushed and not well-thought out.

In particular, The Rise of Skywalker, Suicide Squad and the theatrical cut of Justice League felt like befuddled studios unable to efficiently respond to fan and critic responses to their older, more divisive efforts. The Rise of Skywalker tried to please too many circles of the Star Wars fandom and ended up being a disappointing conclusion to the Skywalker trilogy, and the DCEU films tried to be more crowd-pleasing and actively undermined the original (but flawed) visions for the series.

Although these franchises have been able to somewhat bounce back since their misfires, their brands have undoubtedly taken considerable dents that might take some time to fully recover from and serve as cautionary tales for filmmakers wishing to build an expansive franchise.
