10 Times The MCU Totally Subverted Expectations

5. The Kree Being The Real Villains Of Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel introduces us to Carol Danvers, a Kree warrior who struggles to remember her human past. The marketing for the movie explicitly told us that the Kree were fighting the Skrulls and that the Kree were the good guys. Who were we to question it?

It turns out, this wasn't strictly true.

For a large part of the film, we are still to believe that the Kree warriors are the protagonists as Yon-Rogg appears to help Carol train and become a better warrior. However, in the third act of the film, we find out that in fact the Kree empire is the enemy and the Skrulls aren't actually as evil as they're portrayed to be.

While the details aren't massively important, the twist of finding out the Kree's true intentions was unexpected and more than welcome. By the middle of the film, Captain Marvel had begun to feel a bit predictable, so to have the roles of hero and villain swapped was a more than welcome plot device.
