10 Times The MCU Totally Subverted Expectations
6. Quicksilver Dying In Age Of Ultron
n an attempt to protect a young child, Hawkeye put his life on the line, and was about to be shot at the climax of Age Of Ultron. But despite his quarrels with Clint throughout the film, Quicksilver ran in front of the bullets to save his life in an unexpected turn of events.
With the entire movie gearing up for a Hawkeye death, seeing a new character sacrifice himself was really surprising and emotional. The two superheroes had been having difficulty together from the start, but Pietro's demonstration of courage and generosity really got to Hawkeye, helping to steer him towards retirement. Temporarily at least.
Quicksilver's untimely death was also obviously a large part of Wanda's character development. Losing her closest ally while fighting off hordes of robots took its toll on Scarlet Witch and led to her being somewhat unstable and unable to fully control her powers, which kickstarts the events of Civil War.
