10 Times The MCU Was Right To Forget The Source Material

6. Donald Blake - Thor

After Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk had kept the Marvel Cinematic Universe relatively grounded, the Thor franchise brought to the table the fantastical elements of Asgard and its people, the Bifrost, and Laufi and the Frost Giants. The biggest game changer however, was Thor himself, and his mighty hammer.

The powers that the God of Thunder and Mjolnir bought to Earth was unprecedented, and was done slightly different to how the character was first shown in the comics.

When Thor was banished to Midgard by Odin in the source material, he was given an alter ego as something of a host. While on Earth, Thor took the form of a medical student by the name of Donald Blake to teach him humanity. Later, much like Billy Batson and Shazam, Thor was able to shed the form of Donald and transform into the God of Thunder.

For the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the mortal character's role was reduced to an easter egg on a name tag, and the narrative was better off for the omission. This would have potentially overcomplicated an already strong origin story with an unnecessary new layer and dimension.
