10 Times The MCU Was Right To Forget The Source Material

7. Star-Lord's Father - Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

From the very first scene of Guardians of the Galaxy, we see just how important Peter Quill's relationship with his mother is, but it took until Volume 2 to meet Star-Lord's father in the MCU. Not only did this introduce us to a wonderful new villain, it answered some big questions that had surrounded Quill since his MCU introduction.

In the source material, Peter's father is not Ego the Living Planet, but is J'son, a rather forgettable villain from outer space. The King of the Spartax system crash landed on Earth and was helped by Meredith Quill, but by the time he left, he had no idea that he was leaving her with child.

In many regards, their stories are similar. Both fathers sought out Peter after he became the famous Star-Lord, but only Ego was a Celestial looking to combine his powers with that of his son to expand his reach across the entire universe.

Thanks to Marvel Studios omitting J'Son from Star-Lord's lore, and replacing him with Ego, the Guardian of the Galaxy's legacy in the franchise became much richer, and the character himself far more powerful.
