10 Times The Movie Killer Was Hiding In Plain Sight
1. Josef - Creep
And finally, a slightly left-field pick with the fantastic low-budget found footage film Creep - which, if you haven't seen yet, you absolutely should. Like, now.
Much like Scream, the brilliance of the movie is that it lays out the truth to the audience early on, yet sews just enough seeds of doubt that viewers quickly begin to second-guess themselves.
The film follows Aaron (played by writer-director Patrick Brice), a videographer who answers an ad placed by the titular creep Josef (Mark Duplass).
Josef is an intensely weird man who claims he's dying of cancer and wants to record some messages for his family, and the film's entire conceit is whether Josef is simply an oddball or actually something worse.
The strangeness quickly ramps up, with Josef asking Aaron to film him taking a bath, and before you know it, he's stalking Aaron while wearing a terrifying wolf mask.
And yet, while it absolutely seems too obvious that Josef will turn out to be a murderer, the grisly truth is revealed at the end, when Aaron has a final meeting with Josef in the apparent safety of a public park.
As Aaron waits, Josef sneaks up on him and butchers him with an axe. In a closing scene, Josef expresses surprise at Aaron's naivete, which feels like a comment totally pointed at the audience for not fully appreciating his murderous insanity from the start.
Though the ambiguity is obviously totally gone in the sequel, Creep 2 nevertheless proved to be a surprisingly effective follow-up.
