10 Times The Oscars Recognized 'Cool' Movies
6. Bridemaids
Notable Nominations: Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay.
The Oscars have often been criticized for their lack of embracing comedies at the awards. Each year, the nominations list is filled with prestige films and serious dramas while gut-busting films are ignored. However, every once in a while, the Academy likes a good laugh as with Bridesmaids in 2012.
Bridesmaids starred Kristen Wiig as a single woman struggling to plan her best friend's wedding while dealing with the unusual group of fellow bridesmaids. The film was an R-rated hit, proving Wiig did indeed have a career outside of Saturday Night Live and making Melissa McCarthy a household name.
The Academy responded just as favorably to the female-driven comedy, nominating it for two major awards. The nomination for the film's screenplay wasn't too much of a shocker as the film is really sharp and full of hilarious moments.
The real shocker was Melissa McCarthy's nomination for Supporting Actress. Don't get me wrong, she was absolutely perfect in the role of the blunt, super confident Megan and deserved the recognition, but she's got to be the first actress to be nominated for a role in which she poops in a sink.
