10 Times The Oscars Recognized 'Cool' Movies
5. Mad Max: Fury Road
Notable Nominations: Best Director and Best Picture.
It's a sad but true fact that they just don't make movies like Mad Max: Fury Road anymore - or ever, really. When a franchise returns to the screen after a massive absence, more often than not it's a disappointment. With Fury Road, George Miller not only made immense leaps with the Mad Max series, but with filmmaking itself.
The movie is so out-there it's a wonder how Miller was able to convince a studio to put some real money behind it. Even star Tom Hardy admitted that during filming, he had no indication of the masterpiece he was a part of. Somehow Miller managed to extract all the insane ideas floating in his head for the big screen.
From the mind-boggling stunts, to the perfect world-building, to the flamethrower guitar, fans loved the insanity of it all and it was hailed by many of the best film of the year.
Such an impactful bit of filmmaking is hard for the Academy to ignore, no matter what the genre. They embraced it whole-heatedly, nominating it for a stunning 10 Oscars, including Best Picture and of course, Best Director and it walked away with 6, even without any of the big ones.
