10 Times Two Actors Perfectly Executed The Same Character
3. Pennywise The Clown - Tim Curry & Bill Skarsgard
When horror master Stephen King’s substantial novel IT was turned into a two-part TV mini-series by director Tommy Lee Wallace (Halloween III: Season Of The Witch) in 1990, Tim Curry superbly portrayed Pennywise, scaring the hell out of audiences while inciting a deep rooted fear of clowns for many. Pennywise is a supernatural demon who feeds on the fear of children, lulling them in to a false sense of security before turning on his victims and exposing himself as the murderous being he is.
Curry exquisitely performed the two sides of the character, excelling at the menacing side of the clown and making the role one of the most iconic in horror from that era. However, the relatively low budget effort was always ripe for a glossier remake, and that arrived with Chapter One of the story in 2017 and Chapter Two in 2019, both directed by Andy Muschietti and placing Bill Skarsgard into the role of Pennywise.
Tim Curry had enormous shoes to fill but Skarsgard stepped up to the plate, taking the character into an even more sinister direction, albeit this time aided by the significant use of CGI. He delivers a wonderfully creepy version of Pennywise with an even bigger gulf between the two sides of the character, as highlighted in the iconic kill scene where he lures a young boy to his death from a sidewalk drain, in what is the most famous scene from the movie.
