5. Nick Fury

After Nick Fury had escaped through a mouse hole following the first attack against him by the Winter Soldier (when the antagonist used a magnetic grenade on his SUV while he was driving across Washington, D.C.), he headed to Captain America's apartment to warn him of the danger. The Winter Soldier had, however, followed him there - and he shot Fury twice in the chest. Fury was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His corpse was even mourned first hand by the likes of Maria Hill, the Black Widow and Captain America - but he wasn't actually dead at all. Fury had faked his own death by taking Tetrodotoxine B - a drug developed as a heart-rate suppressant by Bruce Banner - in order to go off the radar, and he revealed himself alongside Hill to Captain America and Black Widow when he accompanied them to a secret location in order to infiltrate the Triskelion and destroy HYDRA's Project Insight. He remains undercover in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
