10 Times Writers Hated The Movie Versions Of Their Work
4. The NeverEnding Story
Despite being a bit of a box office bomb, 1984's The NeverEnding Story is still seen by many people as a beloved children's classic to this day. However, the original writer of the story, Michael Ende, was absolutely furious with the film version of his work.
The film, which was produced in Ende's homeland of Germany, was actually the most expensive movie to be made outside the US at the time, but the author claimed that all that money hadn't helped. Ende famously called the film a "gigantic melodrama of kitsch, commerce, plush and plastic" and was very upset at all the major changes the moviemakers had introduced.
He felt that the story of the film was so far removed from his original novel that he threatened to sue the production company unless they ceased development of the film or changed its title. The company refused and Ende went through with his lawsuit, but lost.
