Roald Dahl is another writer who tried to get involved in the film adaptation of one of his famous books, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but was mostly ignored. The English author wrote a screenplay for the film and did receive a mention in the credits, but his original work was drastically altered by American screenwriter David Seltzer.

Seltzer added in songs like "Pure Imagination", turned the relatively minor book character of Slugworth into a larger villain, and gave Wonka himself much more of a starring role, while reducing the screen time of Dahl's original hero, Charlie Bucket. Dahl also wanted to be involved in casting and pushed heavily for comedian Spike Milligan to be given the role of Wonka, so was disappointed when the part went to Gene Wilder.

Dahl was so upset and disappointed by the film that he refused to sign any more movie deals for over a decade, and he even put an amendment in his will to state that his Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Sequel, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, should never be made into a movie.
