10 Tiny Annoying Details In Movies You Can't Unsee
9. The Weird Counting - Se7en
David Fincer's 1996 thriller Se7en features a stellar cast, with Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt cast as detectives William Somerset and David Mills respectively, who are on the trail of notorious serial killer, John Doe, played by Kevin Spacey.
At the film's outset the murders representing gluttony and greed have already occurred. When analysing the clues back at the police station, which include a passage from Paradise Lost, as well as more on-the-nose clues such as the words 'gluttony' and 'greed' written at their individual crime scene, Somertset quickly links the murders to the seven deadly sins.
When explaining this information to his commanding partner and officer, however, Somerset reels off the remaining sins whilst simultaneously counting on his right hand. The strange part? The experienced detective starts from his pinky finger and ends at his thumb.
In dactylonomy - more commonly known as finger-counting - there are two recognised methods for counting on one's hand in the Western world: starting from the thumb is the "European" method, whilst American's typically start from the index finger. When we consider this, I urge you to count from pinky to thumb, palm facing away from you, and you will see just how unnatural this feels.
