10 Tired Film Franchises That Desperately Need A Break

8. Despicable Me

Illumination's breakthrough success came in the form of the original Despicable Me. It was an unexpected smash at the box office in the summer of 2010, with a stellar voice cast, and a fun concept. And since then, Illumination has seemingly had one goal in mind: Make people hate this franchise.

Despicable Me 2 threw out the villainous concept of the original, in favor of following Gru on his adventures of falling in love and trying to be a good guy. Because that's what we all really wanted - a left-turn into genericism.

The film also put an increased emphasis on the Minions, Gru's henchman, who were entertaining side characters in the first film, but became core components in the sequel.

And sadly, it only got worse from there. The Minions took over in a solo movie (!?) two year later, which made a billion dollar at the box office (!?!!?!). Now, Illumination will never allow us even a moment away from these yellow monsters. From advertising, to their own logo, they are constantly being shoved down our collective throats.

Give it a rest, for the sake of everybody's mental health. Please.
