10 Tiresome Directors Who’ve Done Nothing New In The Last Ten Years

4. Tyler Perry

TylerPerryKnown For: Perry has astonishingly directed roughly 30 movies since 2002 and is best known for the Madea series of films, in which he also stars in drag as the title character. The remainder of his filmography features primarily black casts and he is distinguished as one of the most prolific black filmmakers working today. The Last 10 Years: Of the 15 of Perry's movies that critics actually decided to review over the last decade, only one, I Can Do Bad All By Myself, has received a Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score, with critics frequently complaining that the director simply churns out movies with very similar themes and characters, doing little to distinguish each new project. Even if you've seen a few of the director's movies, it's unlikely you'd be able to recall much from them other than, perhaps, the fact that Tyler Perry cross-dresses in some of them. Still, to his credit, they're always financially successful...somehow. What We'd Love To See: Perry taking a break for a few years and coming up with something less generic and more interesting. Hell, maybe opt for a whole new genre entirely, like a thriller or a horror flick.
