10 Totally Unanswered Questions From Your Favourite Christmas Films

8. Just Friends - Chris Brander's Gastrointestinal Aversion to Sweets

More of a modern Christmas movie, Just Friends is a staple in my house around Christmastime. Ryan Reynolds is gorgeous even in a fat suit, especially lipsyncing to All-4-One's "I Swear". When Reynold's character, Chris Brander, first arrives in Jersey, he goes to lunch with his high school crush, Jamie. The two, having been close friends in high school, frequented the diner they were at and, rather than take their orders, the waitress brings what they used to order all the time ten years earlier. Chris gets a plate of candy, sugar, and whipped cream encrusted pancakes. Pushing the plate away, he says, "I haven't eaten sweets in ten years. Do you have any idea what that would do to my stomach?" However, later on in the movie, Chris eats Christmas cookies and even later helps Jamie eat a pint of ice cream. Now, I know things go on off camera, but in a movie as crass as this one, surely we would have been invited to see the aftermath of those sweets on Chris's stomach, but we weren't. Is it because Chris was lying about the lunch of sugar and calories? Probably not. It isn't an uncommon phenomenon for your stomach to reject things that you haven't eaten in years. So, it probably wasn't a lie. Why, then, can Chris eat sweets at the end of the movie, but not at the beginning? I only ask because he makes a big deal about it. If they hadn't brought attention to it in the beginning, it wouldn't have been an unanswered question.
