10 Totally Unnecessary Movie Sequels That Everybody Wants Anyway

10. District 10

In the case of District 9, a sequel to Neill Blomkamp's modern sci-fi masterpiece (seriously: it's a great movie) kind of makes sense. The picture ended on something of a cliffhanger, after all - with alien creature Christopher Johnson promising to return to Earth in order to help former government worker Wikus van de Merwe (Sharlto Copley). So despite the fact that yes, District 9 doesn't need a sequel in the same way that, say, the first movie based on a trilogy of books might, the first installment at left the possibility open in a way that means any follow-ups won't appear to be completely contrived in a way that feels like Hollywood have run out of ideas and have come crawling. The conditions of a sequel, of course, depend on whether or not both Blomkamp and Copley are available to return - and whether they'd want to. Making District 10 without them would be a total no-go; nobody wants to a follow-up without their involvement. Likelihood? Pretty good. Blomkamp has recently spoken out about a "cool idea" he has for a potential sequel movie, so fingers crossed.
