For most of its runtime, Sleepaway Camp is a typical 80s slasher movie, albeit with lots of bad acting and dialogue, so you might wonder why its still being talked about all these years later. Then the ending comes out of nowhere to slap you across the face and leave you asking what the hell just happened. In the opening of the 1983 film, a boating accident is depicted in which a girl, Angela, witnesses her brother and father being killed. Eight years later, shes traumatized and an extreme introvert, attending camp but not really interacting with anyone. Someone starts killing teenagers, and after a while youll probably guess that Angela is the killer. The ending confirms this, but that's not the twist just yet... In the closing moments, we find out that the daughter, Angela, is actually the one who died in the boating accident, and the brother, Peter, survived. He was raised as Angela his entire life, and therefore the person we've been following as Angela is really a boy. The film ends on a shot of Angela/Peter standing completely naked, covered in blood with his genitalia fully visible. It doesnt quite put the rest of the movie in a new perspective or anything, but it's just so out of nowhere that you cant help but laugh in disbelief.
